Pip’s Mother
Forced into maternity
With no son of her own
She raised him by hand
Rather than a life of her own
Sacrificed her days
For her ungrateful brother
Mrs. Joe didn't choose
When she would become a mother
Always wearing
The clothes of a Housewife
Blacksmith’s Wife
Never to achieve
Her everlasting goals
Mrs. Joe was forced
Into maternity
Mrs. Joe is often seen as Pip’s villain in Great expectations but, I think, that opinions of her are based on her worst traits. While Mrs. Joe may have not been the best mother, she was Pip’s only hope. Mrs. Joe didn’t have to raise Pip, but she did. She went on through the book, as the mean housewife that was unrecognized except for when she hurt Pip. Also, she watches Pip’s dreams, that don’t really differ from her’s, come true, while she is beaten and needs assistance until she dies, at a young age. Overall, I think that Mrs. Joe is an underrated character, who is more kind than she’s made out to be.
