Directions: Describe what Great Expectations would be like if Pip were to have never encountered the convict, Magwitch, in the graveyard.
As Pip sat at his family’s graves, he thought about who they could have been, as he had never met them. All of the sudden, he stopped and looked around, as if somebody was there. Nope. Nobody. As the sun began to go down, Pip decided it was best to go home so that his sister, Mrs. Joe, didn’t get upset with him. The next night, at Christmas dinner, they have a wonderful feast, with pie and brandy and no interruptions. After a little while, Miss Havisham calls upon Pip, to have him come and play with her daughter Estella. Pip falls hopelessly in love with Estella, but, despite his goals to become a gentleman and win her over, she goes off on to marry another man.Pip even gets into a fight with a strange boy one day, whom he never sees again. Eventually, Pip becomes Joe’s apprentice, and then a blacksmith after Joe. Meanwhile, Pip is obsessing over Estella, and wants to win her over one way or another. One day, Pip decides he’s going to London, to be a blacksmith in the city, while he learns to be a gentleman. Pip is no match for the city, and it chews him up and spits him out. Pip wishes he stayed home in his small town. Pip wishes he could have somehow gotten Estella in the end.
Pip realises that he was destined for this, he could never make it on his own. But neither could Magwitch, he goes on to make some money and own his own plot of land for sheep herding in Australia, but he never has any drive, that Pip would have been, to do anything, or maybe Magwitch dies in the swamps of Kent, never to be found. Bottom line, Pip and Magwitch needed each other, and it was a miracle that they met that Christmas eve.
